John McKee Sloan, 11th Bishop of Alabama “An angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them: ‘Do not be afraid; for see – I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people.’” “Good news of great joy for all the people,” and the shepherds were terrified. I imagine the shepherds in Luke’s story were fairly simple people. There wasn’t much nuanced thought in being a shepherd – just count the sheep, scare off the wolves, stay awake. [KH1] There was no theology, no politics, no philosophy– just take care of the sheep. They weren’t prepared for angels or Messiahs. But it was to uncomplicated shepherds that the angels proclaimed the coming of the savior of the world. Their people had hoped and waited for generations for the coming Messiah. Maybe they’d started to think it was never really going to happen – maybe they’d given up – until suddenly one night the sky was full of angels! What their people had longed for was happening – and it scared them. It was everything they’d been hoping for, and it terrified them. It was outside their ability to imagine.
